In the traditional way, many Navajo families live with multiple generations in a single home or homestead. Because parents often must travel to surrounding cities to work, Grandparents are often left to care for grandchildren.
One of the activities that supports the education of children and grandchildren of our Elders is the Backpack Program. Each Fall, support people purchase and stock backpacks to be given out during our Fall foodruns. This can make a wonderful service project for youth groups, service organizations, and Boy or Girl Scout Troops.
These backpacks contain school supplies that children need for their education as well as simple snacks. We need backpacks for boys and girls ages 8-14. Items to be included in the backpacks are:
- Pocket dictionary for children
- Pencils and pens
- Crayola crayons
- Writing Paper
- Snacks and Treats
Please label the back pack on the outside, indicating whether it is for a girl or a boy and their approximate age. Send all backpacks to the warehouse address above to arrive not later than July 30th.
Donations can be made to: For the Children, to support this special project.
