Mary Secody


Yá’át’ééh. My name is Mary Anita Secody. I am from Rough Rock, Arizona on the Navajo Reservation.

I started weaving at the age of six. I learned from my late mom, Dorothy Secody. She taught me everything from start to finishing a rug. I like to weave with wool I dye from vegetables from different plants. I put the plants in boiling water. The plants turn the water green, brown, beige, black, grey, yellow and different colors depending on what kind of plants I have to dye with. I buy all white wool and dye it all myself using plants.

Weaving is my income to take care of my kids and my grandkids and pay for my high Navajo Tribal Utility Authority bills and other monthly bills.
